Why Blog?

I was posed with an interesting question recently. It was by a person who is considering blogging. To paraphrase she asked – Why blog? 

Wow, great question. I’d like to answer her in two parts, and go further and ask you to consider blogging.

 

First, why should she (and you) blog.

• I know her to be intelligent and I would anticipate reading her thoughts. We don’t spend time together outside of church so getting to know her has been limited.
• I know that God speaks to her in ways He doesn’t with me. In getting to know her better I get to know God a little better.
• Even though we are a part of the same body of believers she has experienced a unique spiritual journey. One I and others would benefit from learning about.

 

Second, why I blog.

• Hopefully it has brought some laughter into peoples lives.
• In some posts I’ve been pretty transparent. My desire is that God would use that to impact someone else’s life in a positive way.
• Blogging is a great medium for building a deeper sense of community. I have gotten to know people better and made new friends.
• Blogging is therapeutic.
• It helps me crystallize my thoughts.
• It forces me to refine my basic writing skills – grammar, spelling, punctuation.
• It exposes me to the thoughts of others, and in a way I get to ‘brainstorm’ through life with them. Life to the fullest. Jn 10:10.

 

Herman Melville put it best when he said, "We cannot live for ourselves alone. Our lives are connected by a thousand invisible threads, and along these sympathetic fibers, our actions run as causes and return to us as results."

 

Preemptive strike: Let me shoot some of your objections where they stand. 

#1 – I’m too busy.

Too busy just doesn’t cut it. There are too many benefits to you and others not to blog! Bang! One down. 

#2 – I’m afraid to be publicly vulnerable.

Although it makes for a better blog, you don’t have to be. This is simply not a valid excuse not to blog. Bang! Two dead. 

#3 – Nobody will read my blog.

Maybe not at first, but eventually they will. Even if it is never read by anyone else there are still too many benefits not to blog. Bang! Three ready for the grave digger. 

#4 – Blogging is narcissistic.

It can be, but take the high road. Everyone genuinely has something to offer. To claim otherwise is to devalue what God has created – a unique you. Bang! Four up, four down, and I still have two in the chamber.

JUST DO IT!

We Wants it . . . Precious

Have you noticed the little logo at the very bottom right-hand corner of this page? Site Meter is a service that lets me know how many people are reading this blog.

 

This little statistic thingy has driven me into a state of schizophrenic psychosis. I want to know if anyone is reading what I write and at the same time I’m terrified that some one is actually reading what I write. I often have conversations with myself much like Gollum the dual personality character from the Lord of the Rings.

 

Gollum: “Check it precious. We wants to know. We must know if they’ve been reading.”

Smeagol: “Oh no. No, no, no. There might be too many.”

Gollum: “It’s ours to know. We must know. Click it! Click it!”

Smeagol: “I’m not listening. I’m not listening.”

Gollum: “You’re a wussy! . . . why do you write it then?”

Smeagol: “I write it for us.”

Gollum: “You write for us precious?”

Smeagol: “Yes – yes. Just us”

Gollum: “Liar! We must know if anyone read today.”

Smeagol: “But it scares me . . .”

Gollum: “Then just Gollum will look precious . . . just Gollum . . . click it . . .”

Gollum: “Oh Precious, we had 10 readers today. Smeagol they likes what we write!”

Smeagol: “10 -  AAAAHHHHHHUUUUUU . . .”

 

So, from the bottom of my insecure, schizophrenic little heart – thanks for reading. It's humbling (down right scary) to know you are reading, and I want you to know I try my best to make it worth your time.

Hi, I'm Scott and I'm an addict . . .

I’m not sure whether this is the avenue by which to confess an addiction, but . . .

here I go anyway.

Hi, my name is Scott and I have become addicted to a blog. I check it almost everyday for a new post. It’s the funniest blog that I read.  JT, pictured here,  is one of the most gifted and humorous bloggers I’ve come across.

His blog is real.  It’s raw.  It's a combination of Donald Miller meets Seinfeld.  It seems mostly random, but after you read it you’re left feeling that he’s slipped one past you. You feel like he’s made a purposeful point that you just can’t quite put your finger on, but you can feel it working in your gut. After it simmers in me for awhile it usually surfaces into some sort of spiritual conviction.

His humor is clever and witty.  His mind does crisp gymnastics and you can’t help but to laugh at the circus clown presentation.

I have only two complaints:

1. He doesn't blog often enough to feed my habit

2. He's on some lame blog service that you have to subscribe to just to leave a comment.  I refuse on princple.
